The Global Who's Who is delighted to recognize Dr. David Alexander Hardiman for his exceptional accomplishments as a musician, music educator, band leader, and community leader. With an extraordinary career spanning over six decades, Dr. Hardiman has established himself as an influential figure in the music industry and a source of inspiration in education and cultural leadership.
Dr. Hardiman’s academic achievements underscore his dedication to musical excellence and education. He earned a Bachelor of Music Education (BME) from Indiana University, a Master’s in Music Education from Butler University, and an Honorary Doctorate in Arts World Music from Martin University. As a retired Professor Emeritus of Jazz Studies at the City College of San Francisco, he devoted 30 years to mentoring aspiring musicians.
Even after retiring in 2004, Dr. Hardiman has continued to inspire audiences as the director and band leader of the San Francisco All-Star Big Band and its combos for 50 years. His talent as a trumpet player, composer, and arranger has been showcased in diverse styles, including jazz, Latin, and R&B, captivating audiences both in the United States and internationally.
Celebrating a Legacy of Excellence
Dr. Hardiman’s career is decorated with numerous accolades. Most recently, he was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award of the Year (2024) by the International Association of Top Professionals (IAOTP). Other honors include:

He has also received Certificates of Honor from the City and County of San Francisco, as well as recognition from the California Legislative Assembly and State Senate for his contributions to the arts.
A Global Performer and Visionary Leader
Dr. Hardiman’s performances have graced prestigious international stages, including the North Sea Jazz Festival and events in Spain, Finland, and Italy. His San Francisco All-Star Big Band has collaborated with legendary artists such as Tony Bennett, Gladys Knight and the Pips, and Nancy Wilson.
He has produced acclaimed recordings, including "It'll Be Alright", "37th Anniversary", and "David Hardiman’s Music Around the World". His leadership has extended to ensembles like the St. Gabriel's Celestial Brass Band and various Latin bands, such as Grupo Cafe Canela and Caesar’s All Star Latin Band.
Dedication to Education and Community
As President of the Caribbean Basin Institute for Education and Culture, Dr. Hardiman plays a pivotal role in advancing cultural and educational initiatives. His affiliations with organizations like the National Association of Negro Musicians, the American Federation of Musicians, and the Jazz Action Movement highlight his commitment to preserving and promoting the arts. He is also the Co-founder of the Fillmore Jazz Ambassadors and has held leadership roles in numerous music education and advocacy groups.
Dr. Hardiman attributes his success to perseverance, mentorship, and a profound passion for music. He finds joy in sharing his craft with his son, David Anthony Hardiman, a celebrated musician and educator in his own right. As a retired Professor Emeritus of Jazz Studies at the City College of San Francisco, he devoted 30 years to mentoring aspiring musicians.
He also taught at Alameda College 1974-76; Contra Costa College, Richmond, 1974-75; Teacher of Instrumental Music King Junior High School, Berkeley 1971-74; Indianapolis Public Schools, 1963-71; Teacher Elementary Schools 5th-6th grades, 1961-63; Substitute Teacher 1951-61; Student Teacher, Crispus Attucks High School, 1959.
